Cool down after a good work out

So you have just pumped some iron, cursed your trainer for making do those two extra stomach crunches, but managed to run on the treadmill dreaming about the sumptuous toast and sunny side up, sausages and juice waiting for you at your breakfast table. The last three minutes on the treadmill seems like an eon, and once you’re done, you rush your sweaty body straight to the shower.

Though you feel great after the work-out, you’re dreading the next morning because you’re sure that every muscle in your body is going to scream, ache, make you walk funny and go ouch, ouch, ouch’ at the slightest move. Why that happens do you think? Simple, you haven’t cooled down.

What if I don’t?
A cool down is of super importance and should be factored into every exercise regime, just like the warm up. The most definite effect of not cooling down properly after intense exercise is that it leads to stiff and painfully sore muscles the next day or causes cramps.

This is because abruptly stopping in an activity may cause pooling of the blood and slow the removal of waste products like lactic acid, which is accumulated in the muscles. The tension in the muscles also leads to uncomfortable tremors, which make your limbs feel weak and wobbly.

The Routine
So, make sure you cool down after vigorous exercise. The routine however, purely depends on the intensity of your exercise regimen and the amount of pressure put on your muscles and body.

It can involve a slow jog, walk or stretch. It is said that a minimum
10-15 minute cool down period allows heart rate and breathing to return to normal. Slow walking will prevent blood from pooling in the legs, which is a cause of dizziness and blackouts.

The simplest way to cool down is to follow the same stretches that you do to
warm up. This will prevent the muscles from becoming sore and stiff. So, breakfast can wait ten minutes?

Know your thyroid

Today's super woman, balancing home and career may be more prone to thyroid disorders than she realizes. The pressures of multitasking put her system at risk, which goes up particularly for new mothers.

What is thyroid?
The thyroid is a butterfly shaped gland in front of the neck, which produces the hormones T3 and T4. The thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) produced by the pituitary gland controls their production.

What causes HYPOTHYROIDISM?
Stress makes the thyroid gland falter. It has a strong genetic basis and a gender bias, being more common among women.

What are the symptoms of hypothyroidism?
It is often linked to depression or abnormal cholesterol and sugar levels, particularly during pregnancy or lactation. There are a number of subtle symptoms which mimic hypothyroidism, the commonest being 'feeling drained or tired'. This is often accompanied by weight gain, swelling of the feet, body or face, water retention, irregular cycles, dry skin, constipation and hair loss.

How is it tested and treated?
Usually blood tests of Free T3, Free T4 and TSH are conducted. The thyroid hormone replacement (T4) pill has to be taken lifelong.

Tips to control hypothyroidism
  • Eat right and less, walk more, sleep well, smile.
  • Take medicine regularly.
  • Drink boiled or mineral water; avoid water filters, which use iodine as disinfectants.
  • Avoid iodine-rich foods like broccoli, soya, prawns, shellfish and crabs.
  • Get Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D3 levels checked, particularly if you're a vegetarian.
  • Test your thyroid regularly and keep it in control.
  • The winter season aggravates thyroid, so be careful.

Why is breast-feeding necessary and beneficial?

Breast feeding is essential for the mental and physical development of a new born baby. Mother’s milk is the most natural and complete food for the baby. Breast feeding generates integration between the baby and mother creating a life long attachment. The posture of feeding, patience and affectionate touch of the mother makes the child relaxed, comfortable and secure.

The first milk called colostrums is a yellowish, thick and sticky liquid rich in antibodies, minerals and proteins. The baby may be unable to suck initially
but soon gets adapted to it. Great care and patience is required from the part of the mother during this stage. Sucking stimulates the milk glands, enhancing milk production. The baby will start chewing the nipples after four to five months of breast feeding. The is a natural indication showing the need of solid foods, but it is better to seek the advise of a pediatrician. The child may have problems to digest solid food fully so weaning foods can be given at this stage.

Mother’s milk alone may not be sufficient enough to supply all the nutrients required for a growing child. Inclusion of cereals and fiber rich food in the diet can improve the muscular functions. But breast feeding should not be stopped in this stage because it provides all the necessary nutrients to keep the baby healthy.

Breast feeding is useful to both baby and mother and should be deliberately promoted if the mother does not suffer from any illness. Mother’s infected by tuberculosis or HIV and those addicted to alcohol or drugs should avoid breast feeding. Breast feeding consumes a fare amount of energy and reduces weight gained during pregnancy. It helps to regain the uterus size and to stop bleeding. Lactating in mothers can reduce the risk for ovarian and breast cancer. The possibility of pelvic fractures and osteoporosis are seemed to lessen in breast feeding women.

Baby can be fed either directly from mother’s breast or feeding bottle. Mother’s milk is the natural and balanced source of protein, fat, sugar and water required for the infant. The difficulties in the preparation, mixing and measuring of artificial feeds can be avoided. Moreover improper sterilization of bottles can result in infection.
Breast milk is available at any time with the right temperature and taste. Breast feeding can enhance teeth growth and speech development. It can reduce sleeplessness in both child and mother.

Mother’s milk has several preventive aspects and such infants have a less possibility towards Sudden
Infant Death Syndrome and other diseases. Premature babies who are breast fed will be healthier than those artificially fed. Breast fed babies will be mentally stronger and have better I.Q. It also raises the self-confidence and relationship between the child and mother. Breast feeding is that what makes a mother sacred above everyone in the world.

Honey, it’s all about honey!

Honey has been used from ancient times by human beings as natural food, sweetener, medicine, cosmetics and preservatives. Honey is a natural carbohydrate compound that has many medicinal values. It is a low calorie food which is capable of releasing large amount of energy. Proteins in honey are found to be very effective to regenerate lost tissues. It also helps in the formation of enzymes and biological ferments that act as a catalyst in the process of oxidation. Honey is one of the most valuable foods and its daily consumption can keep you away from many diseases.

Honey is a liquid edible substance with golden color, extracted by bees from the nectar of flowers. Artificially made honey is now available and is not effective like natural honey. Glucose, starch, and cane sugar used in artificial honey can add more calories to you body. Natural honey can be distinguished by the presence of pollen grains. This can be verified under the microscope. The condition of flower blossom is the main factor that determines the quality of honey. Honey gets its sweetness from glucose and fructose. Honey contains 20% water and about 79% sugar. The sugar part in honey is further divided into; glucose 25- 37%, fructose 34- 43%, sucrose 0.5- 3% and maltose 5-12%. The calorie level is 319 kilo calories per 100gms of honey.

Honey gets granulated when kept unused for long time however heating regains its liquid form.
People have a great affiliation towards sweetness especially children. Sweeteners are needed and not harmful for the body to an extent. But using sweeteners without control can result in weight gain and other health problems. Honey is a better option than other sweeteners since it contains less calories and carbohydrates. It is better for your health since it contains minerals and vitamins.

Honey contains two inverted sugars called laevulose and dextrose. Inversion is a process that takes place during digestion, which converts normal sugars to fruit sugars. In the case of honey this process is already done by bees. So consumption of honey saves the digestive system from this process. Person having digestive problems due to the deficiency of enzymes like invertase and amylase need not depend on monosaccharide if they use honey. More over proteins in honey can build and replace tissues. Honey has germicidal effects and is free of bacteria unlike milk.

Medicinal Uses of Honey
  • Honey mixed with the carrot juice improves eyesight
  • Honey and ginger juice mixed equally gives quick relief to cold, cough and sore throat.
  • Honey mixed with black pepper powder and ginger juice helps to cure asthma.
  • One teaspoon of garlic juice mixed with two teaspoon honey taken twice a day can reduce blood pressure.
  • One glass of warm water mixed with 2 teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of lemon juice taken on empty stomach helps to purify blood, reduce fat and to clean the intestines. It is good for obesity and is an effective drink for fasting.
  • One teaspoon of anise powder mixed with two teaspoon of honey strengthens the heart muscles and improves its functions.
  • One drop of honey in each eye once a week cleans the eyes.

Sugar-less sweets, sweetening life!

Sweeteners are the essential part of food and drinks. It is unimaginable to think of a sugar free world. Sweeteners not only increase the taste of food they are used as preservatives to keep the freshness of food and acts as base for the fermentation for breads. They are essential for making cakes, ice creams and carbonated beverages. But the caloric level of sweeteners is high and excessive use results in health related problems like weight gain and diabetes mellitus.

Artificial sweeteners are an alternative for such nutritive (caloric) sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners are free of calories and are many times sweeter than sugar. The problem with nutritive sweetener is that it contains 4 calories per gram. People using nutritive sugar in large quantities get these calories which are converted to fat deposits resulting in increased body weight. The nutritive sweeteners can come into your body from corn sweeteners, confectionery sugar, dextrose, invert sugar, natural sweetener or sugar, turbinado sugar, sucrose, glucose, fructose, lactose, maltose, mannitol, maple sugar, molasses, honey and sorbitol.

Artificial sweeteners can be made from chemicals or directly from sugar molecules. They can provide the sweetness of nutritive sugar without adding any extra calorie to the body. This helps to maintain the body weight without any need to avoid sweetness from your life. They will not raise the sugar level in the body and people with diabetes can use them without any fear. Aspartame, Saccharine, Cyclamates, Acesulfame K and Sucralose are low calorie sweeteners and most of them are many times sweeter than sugar.

All artificial sweeteners except aspartame are stable to heat and can be used for cooking and baking. There were certain concerns on artificial sweeteners that they are harmful to health and are carcinogenic. But latest studies prove that they don’t produce any harmful effects in the human body. Lead acetate was used as an artificial sugar in the past but it can cause lead poisoning and is no more used. Artificial sweeteners cannot be consumed like sugar; it can be used only as a food additive. Only very small quantity is required to substitute large quantities of sugar. Sometimes artificial sweeteners generate an unpleasant taste after eating.

Food and Drug Administration have set a limit called “acceptable daily intake” (ADI) for all artificial sweeteners to avoid its overuse. The maximum amount of artificial sweetener that is safe to consume everyday is:

1. Aspartame – 50 mg per kg of body weight

2. Saccharin – 5 mg per kg of body weight

3. Acesulfame K – 15 mg per kg of body weight

4. Sucralose – 5 mg per kg of body weight

5. Neotame – 18 mg per day

How to fight against obesity?

Obesity is a serious medical problem that requires dedicated effort from the affected person. Consumption of nutrient rich foods without any control and lack of physical activity are the major factors that increase the possibility of obesity. Strict dieting habits and constant exercise is required to escape obesity. Exercise helps to burn extra calories deposited in the body and dieting prevents new deposits. Several medications and fat control diets are now available; but they can’t produce a long term impact on the subject.

Over eating is the predominant feature found in all people having obesity. The spread of fast-food culture has acted as a catalyst to accelerate obesity. Various campaigns were conducted in schools, colleges, and internet and food packages to emphasize the calamity of over eating. But still calorie consumption has been increasing at an alarming rate all over the world.

Obesity is caused by the deposit of large quantities of fat in your body. This results in severe health problems like high blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, cardiac diseases and stroke. Obesity is a major reason for coronary heart disease, which can lead to heart attack. HDL cholesterol level decreases in fat people making them more vulnerable to heart diseases. Obesity is also a major reason for gallstones and can adversely affect degenerative joint disease.

The only effective solution for obesity is dieting and exercising. Dieting helps to reduce body mass considerably. Exercise helps to reduce you body mass by burning away the excess calories in your body. But when these two are complemented on a regular and long-term basis, you can enjoy the results for your lifetime.

A balanced diet should contain nutritious food to avoid vitamin deficiencies or malnutrition.

Avoid foods with high calorie, fats or sugars. Try to use unsaturated vegetable oil based fats instead of saturated animal based fats. Inclusion of fiber rich foods in you diet will provide additional energy to do more physical activities. Include low energy dense foods that have less calories per unit weight in you diet. Vegetables, fruits, lean meat, fish, grains, and beans are low energy dense foods. Energy dense foods have high calories in a small amount of food, and are rich in fats and sugars. Avoid energy dense foods like red meat, egg yolks, fried foods, fast foods with high fat or sugar, sweets, pastries, butter and fatty salad dressings. Alcohol, non-diet soft drinks and high calorie snack foods should be avoided because they add calories to the body but very little nutrition. Your diet should include complex carbohydrates like brown rice, whole-grain bread, fruits and vegetables rather than simple carbohydrates like table sugars, sweets, doughnuts, cakes, and muffins.

Physical activities require a large amount of energy in the form of calories from the body. Calorie is stored as fat in the body. These fat deposits are broken down to supply calories to the body when you are exercising. Walking, running, swimming and cycling are the most effective forms of exercise for reducing fat. The burning of calories depends on the weight and age of a person. It is difficult for an aged person to lose weight since the metabolic rate is slow. A person with more weight can burn more calories than a person with less weight doing same exercises. This happens because the person with higher weight has to carry his body mass also. Regular and intense exercise when combined with balanced dieting can be more effective to fight against obesity.
